Astronomy Update

We are still on Venus.........

I have to say, we are all sick of Venus!

But, this is our last book for this planet, and we will be moving on to Earth!

This is the book we are reading now. It has quite a bit of detail in it, so we are reading 1 chapter per day.

Do you utilize your library?  We LOVE our library!  We take a trip to the library every week.  The boys get to check out 15 each.  And let me just say, they loooooove to check out books.  And I am happy to say, they read most of what they check out.

We are using our library to do our Astronomy Unit Study.  If you are interested in our previous updates, here is the link.  http://www.genesis129trailblazers.blogspot.com/search/label/Astronomy

I hope you have a GREAT day!

Astronomy Unit Study Update

We are now past Mercury and are now studying Venus!   I was going to start an art project, but the boys were not very well behaved at the store yesterday, so we moved on from the fun stuff to the not so fun stuff of watching the video of Venus.

I went onto the Public Library's website and searched the catalog for anything on the subject of Venus.  I found a ton of stuff!  So, I sorted through the titles and found 1 video and several books (will post those when we get to them).

This video was a great introduction to Venus.  Although, when it started out, I had to pause it to make sure it wasn't an X rated movie.  LOL!  The introduction was nothing but artwork of the Goddess Venus.  Well, if you've seen any pictures or even any artwork of Venus, you know she is a half naked, if not all naked woman.  I have 2 boys ages 7 & 8.  I was a little concerned.  But, I just forwarded through the introduction and on to the movie/documentary.

Like I said earlier, it was very good.  We will be studying more about Venus in the next few weeks, so be sure to check back for updates!

Check your local library for great resources on study material!

Have a great day!

Astronomy Update

Well, we are wrapping up our Mercury study.  It has been fascinating.  Have I remembered anything we have learned?  NOPE!  But, the Big Guy has.  The Little Guy is not interested at all, but as long as he is in the room paying attention, I really don't care if he retains any of it.  At this point, he does not want to be a scientist or have anything to do with the space program.  LOL!  Now, the Big guy LOVES science and space.  This is why he is like a sponge during science time.

Here is the last of the books we read about Mercury:

This book had so much information in it, we only read one chapter per day.  There were 7 chapters. We even read the chapters about Pluto, even though we are not to Pluto yet.  It was very interesting to learn about the surface, atmosphere, etc of Mercury.

Utilize your library for great unit studies.

Have a great day!

Astronomy Update

Well, we have been steadily working our way through all of the books I could get from the library on the planet Mercury.

If you haven't been with me before, we are doing a unit study on Astronomy.  Taking an in depth look at each planet.  Right now, we are focusing on Mercury, since it is the closest to the sun.

So, we added this book to the study.  Each book we add seems to have something new in it that we didn't know.  We are learning so much, I am really excited!  We don't have very many more books to study about Mercury, then we will be off to the next planet.

See, after looking at several lists of what a 2nd and 3rd grader should know about science, I discovered that at this point, they are just touching on each aspect of science.  Well, we are probably getting more in depth than most 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms on the subject of Astronomy.  But, me and my boys are enjoying it and we are learning a LOT too!

So see, if you are new homeschooler.  Let this be an encouragement to you that you don't have to have an expensive science curriculum.  You can just go visit your local library and find all you need to to learn about science!

God bless you all!

Earth Exhibit

Only 10 libraries in the US will get this exhibit.  I am so thankful our library is one of them.  My boys LOVE the exhibit.  We go to the library at least once per week and every time we have to go check out the exhibit.  It will be on display until sometime in September.  Oh Boy!

Not only do they have these cool interactive devices, they also are having excellent lectures.  This past Tuesday, we went to a lecture about the solar system.  WOW!  The taller boy loved it!  He is going to be my science major.  The younger boy sat there and listened, but like me, half of the stuff the Astrophysicist said was wayyyyyy over his head.

There will be one lecture per week now until the exhibit is done.  I can't wait!  Some of the lectures will be about reef making, weather forecasting, etc.

Have a FAR OUT day!

Astronomy Unit Study

If you didn't see my first post about our astronomy unit study, here it is.  We have been adding to our ASTRONOMY unit study by reading books about Mercury.

See that word Updated in the title?  Yea, maybe back in 1980.  LOL!  But, since I know absolutely nothing about ASTRONOMY, it did have things in it that we did not know.  It was a fun, short book that kept the boys attention.

The next day, we read this book.

This also was a short, fun book as well.  The boys really enjoyed it.

Astronomy Unit Study

Science:  What do you do for science?

Well, this year we are going to try to do unit studies.  If it doesn’t work out, I will order science curriculum.  But, from all of the “standards”  that I have read, in 2nd and 3rd grade, they just touch on each type of science.

Right now, we are doing an astronomy study.  We started by watching this movie.

Well, it was bbbbboooooorrrrriiiiinnnnggggg!!!!!!!!!  But, we made it through.  (I kind of took a nap, but don’t tell anybody).  We have some books and another series on Netflix to read and watch.  I also have some crafts up my sleeve to do.

I will update every time we add something to the unit study.  We are definitely utilizing the library for our studies.  I’m so excited!!!!!  If we can keep this up, we will save so much from not buying an actual curriculum.

Science is NOT one of my favorite subjects, but I am working on that.  One of my boys LOVES science, so I have to do my best to keep his interest high in the subject.

Do you utilize your library?  We used to go to a satellite branch of our library, and thought we were getting the best.  Well, a few weeks ago, I decided to make the trip down to the actual library.  MAN, were we missing out!  Our satellite branch could fit inside the kid’s section of the main branch.  We are in book heaven now!!!!!

God bless you all!
